The Soundtrack of Sleep

Mother of Invention

Complete silence.  That’s how I like to sleep.  No TV, music, talking, white noise.  Just silence.  My son, on the other hand, needs both the TV and music.  We called on his doctors for some “sound” advice.  They told me that the music he was listening to (a “bubblegum” rock CD) was not a good choice.  He must sleep to soothing meditative music to help him relax, they insisted.

Driving home, I wasn’t sure what to do. I didn’t have anything at home that would fit the bill, or time to go out and get something in time for bedtime.  So, I hit the computer and dashed off a tune that could repeat over and over.  We had just come back from New Mexico, so I had a Native American influence to draw from to give it that meditative, New Age-y kind of feel.

Bedtime song I wrote for my son

My son liked it a lot and slept to it for about a month and a half.  But, after that, he wanted to return to the same bubblegum rock CD he had been listening to before we visited the doctor.  He told me that the upbeat music helped to fuel his dreams.   His internal rhythm is fast and active and he needed his nighttime music to match it.

What helps you sleep?
